Peace

Richmond
The stillness of the morning, no commute

Wednesday, 26 December 2018

The day after

St Pauls
Boxing Day.  Christ is forgotten under the weight of the sales, but St Pauls still looks down ghostly white and surrounded by skeletal trees

Saturday, 22 December 2018

Merry Christmas

One New Change
Have a good time - whatever that means to you

Curtain Road

Curtain Road
Not twelve drummers drumming, but twelve cars a beeping, ten tourists taking pictures, nine pedestrians a leaping (across the road to safety), six buses stopping, but definitely no swans, geese, calling birds, French hens, turtle doves or partridges. Although there is a Red Lion just off Hoxton Square

Wednesday, 12 December 2018

Sunrise under cloud

New Malden
The sun edges up over the horizon, only to disappear into a thick bank of cloud.

Saturday, 8 December 2018

Hanging around

Clerkenwell Road
Autumn was warm for such a long time, and in sheltered spots is still hanging on

Wednesday, 5 December 2018

This train is not mine

Raynes Park
Disruptions at Waterloo on a cold evening, when all you (and thousands of others) want to do is get home, 'getting as close as possible' is the best one can hope for. Cram onto the first train going in the right direction. And then standing on a station that is not yours, the calculation, hope one will materialise, or catch the bus?

Saturday, 1 December 2018

Bright Morning

Great Eastern Street
Bright & sunny but everyone has their hands in their pockets.  Getting colder

London Traffic

Euston Road
Taken from a slow moving bus. There is no other speed on the Euston Road.

Abstract in Black & Grey

Rivington Place
Very linear, very flat. Architects are obsessed with 'Sleek Modern lines' which lets face it are boring most of the time.  Bring back gargoyles, rococco curls and decoration.  And Trees.  Lots and lots of Trees.

Reds of Autumn

Broom Road
A magnificent red made even redder by the early light

Saturday, 3 November 2018

Brooding sunset

Earlsfield
One of those sunsets where the sky feels heavy and the last rays are escaping from the edge of the horizon

Wednesday, 31 October 2018

Enfield Chase

Chase Green Gardens
London stretches much further North than it does South and Enfield is on the outer edge.  This magnificent fungus was growing from a tree stump, where I stopped to eat lunch and was soon surrounded by hopeful ducks and Canada Geese

Boundary Road Gardens

Arnold Circus
It looks like a Great Western Railway seat has been relocated to Shoreditch. The history books describe the redevelopment of the area as 'slum clearence' and a 'Good Thing'.  It didn't do anything to help the locals, who were priced out of the new housing and moved to other poor quarters.  Sound familar?  Today we call it 'Gentrification' and a 'Bad Thing'. The gardens are maintained by the Friends of Arnold Circus.

Cables

Whitechapel
Miles and miles of cables along the District Line

Wednesday, 10 October 2018

Early morning skyline

Shard from Millenium Bridge
There are those who think that all the Shard needs is the Eye of Sauron flaming from the top.  But not on a clear soft morning like this

Saturday, 6 October 2018

Passing commuters

The lives and loves of thousands of people pass us by every day.  These are the lucky few, with seats and room to read

Wednesday, 3 October 2018

Flying buttress

Broadgate Tower
Broadgate tower is built over underground railway lines from Liverpool Street Station so instead of deep foundations it sits on a concrete and steel raft  The flying buttresses are structural, not decorative.

Saturday, 29 September 2018

Pink and grey

View east from Southwark Bridge
Diffuse light flattens everything in a pink and grey morning on the Thames

Wednesday, 26 September 2018

St Pauls morning

Festival Gardens
The flat spaces around St Pauls are due to bomb damage.  They were turned into the Festival Gardens in 1951, for the the Festival of Britain celebrations.  They were designed by Sir Albert Richardson

Saturday, 22 September 2018

Other side

Liverpool Street Station
Liverpool Street viewed from the Broadgate end.

Sunlight & rain

Kingston bridge
On a bus, in the setting sun, with the threat of rain

Saturday, 15 September 2018

Citrus Drops

Broadgate Tower
I presume the orange one is meant to have a jagged edge.  But why? If they are fruit drops wouldn't teeth marks be more appropriate, where it has been eaten?

Wednesday, 12 September 2018

September morning

Clapham
Pink & blue skies and the clouds are gathering overhead

Saturday, 8 September 2018

Red & Black

Waterloo
A rhythm of red and black.  Early, before the hordes spill out and claim them

Wednesday, 5 September 2018

Bright morning, deep shadows

London Bridge
Waiting for a bus up Bishopsgate.  Although sometimes it feels that it would be quicker to walk, but when I do, of course, the bus overtakes me before I get there.

Saturday, 1 September 2018

Late Blooms

Hydrangea
I took this somewhere in Southwark a couple of years ago. Surprised that it was in bloom this late in the season

Wednesday, 29 August 2018

Indigo sunset

Vauxhall
A navy and cream sunset, still officially summer but the nights are drawing in

Saturday, 25 August 2018

Blackfriars cycles

Blackfriars Bridge
The Blackfriars superhighway on a weekday morning, has been described as 'resembling a peloton of the Tour de France', I agree.  Pedestrians cross at the lights, to try anywhere is is risking life & limb!

Wednesday, 22 August 2018

Reflections on a bus

Waterloo
I prefer the bus in the morning. It takes longer, but is so much more civilised than the Tube.  You can look out the windows as well, instead of trying not to look at your fellow passengers, who are right in your face.

Saturday, 18 August 2018

Old Street cycle race

Old Street
At this junction they pack up and race off, to try and beat the lights and get all the way across in one go. If you are a pedestrian, stay well clear

Wednesday, 15 August 2018

Hooray! It's rained

Vauxhall
It's been too hot for me, the trains and Tube are unbearable, but the Gods have relented, just for a while. It has rained

Saturday, 11 August 2018

Turnham not Green

Turnham Green
Looking very pretty in blue, red & white.

Wednesday, 8 August 2018

Rainbow or Pride

Broadgate
Number Five has had a rainbow added to it's usual plain exterior. Summer fun or Pride?

Saturday, 4 August 2018

Under the arches

Union Street
The building work is finally finished and the planting in front of the arches is great.

Wednesday, 1 August 2018

Bank in the abstract

Threadneedle Street
This is what most people see every day of the Bank, walking past or on the bus.  You need to be on the other side of the junction to see the imitation Greek temple facade.

Saturday, 28 July 2018

All the reds

Cornwall Road
Red shutters, curtains, window box and pelargoniums.

Wednesday, 25 July 2018

Cannon Street blues

Cannon Street from Southwark Bridge
Trains and boats, but no planes, although someone did put forward building a helipad on the roof.  The towers are Grade Two listed and the glass city rises up behind

Saturday, 21 July 2018

Waterloo bikes

Waterloo Station
At half seven in the morning there is a forest of bikes outside Waterloo Station and a queue for the Boris bikes (sorry Santander Cycles) By ten am the racks are deserted

Wednesday, 18 July 2018

Cannon Street

Walbrook
Morning sunlight turns restaurant glass into mirrors

Wednesday, 11 July 2018

Curtain Road windows

Curtain Road
Reflections are never smooth, the building curves and twists in impossible ways
